Your first hike: essential gear and tips

Want to get started but not sure where to begin? A successful first hike comes down to a few simple rules. Here is our checklist, tested on hundreds of outings.

1. Choose the right outing

Start with an easy one-day program: 3–5 hours of walking with little elevation gain. The level is always shown on our programs; if in doubt, ask the team.

2. Shoes come first

Hiking shoes with a good sole are essential. Avoid brand-new shoes on the day — wear them for a few days beforehand to prevent blisters.

3. Dress in layers

  • A breathable t-shirt (avoid cotton)
  • A fleece or light sweater
  • A windbreaker or waterproof jacket
  • Cap, sunglasses and sunscreen

4. What goes in the backpack

  • 1.5–2 litres of water
  • A packed lunch and snacks (dried fruit, bars)
  • A small kit: plasters, tissues, personal medication
  • Charged phone and ID

5. Find your pace

Consistency is the secret: walk at a pace that lets you talk. Sip water often, before you feel thirsty.

6. Respect nature

Carry your rubbish out, stay on the trails and respect the villagers you meet. Responsible travel keeps the mountains beautiful for others.

7. Go with a guide

For a first time, experienced guides make all the difference: a well-planned route, safety and group energy. No gear yet? Our rental service has you covered.
