Akchour: waterfalls, Bridge of God and tips for a perfect day

Nestled in the Talassemtane national park, about thirty minutes from Chefchaouen, the Akchour valley has become one of the favorite nature outings for Moroccans. Turquoise water, dizzying gorges and waterfalls: it’s the ideal day to relax far from the city.

Two trails, two atmospheres

  • The big waterfall: about 2 hours of walking (one way) along the wadi, with passages on the rocks and several natural pools to cool off.
  • The Pont de Dieu: an impressive natural arch, accessible in 45 minutes to 1 hour of walking, with a spectacular view of the river.

Fit walkers combine the two during the day: allow 5 to 6 hours of walking in total, breaks included.

When to go?

Spring (March to June) offers generous waterfalls and vibrant vegetation. Summer is perfect for swimming, but the site is very busy on weekends: leave early. After heavy rain, some passages may be closed for safety reasons.

What to put in your bag?

  • Walking shoes that grip well (or hiking sandals), because the rocks are slippery.
  • At least 1.5 liters of water, a picnic and dried fruit.
  • A swimsuit, a light towel and a waterproof bag for the phone.
  • Sun cream and cap: the sun beats down hard on your gorges.

Why go in a group?

With a guide, you avoid itinerary errors, you take advantage of the best swimming spots and you return the same evening without worrying about the road. At Amouddou Family, the Akchour outing leaves from Tangier with transport, supervision and a friendly atmosphere.
